Country Overview
Who is a good fit for life and immigration in Uruguay?

- Match the country to your family's main objective.
- Check your migration and tax residence separately.
- Review the relevant page for legal status, citizenship, or assets.
Uruguay in the RULATAM strategy
Uruguay is the safe haven of South America: a jurisdiction for capital protection, tax planning, residence and a long horizon.
This is a legal framework for asset protection: here ownership is sacred and there are no exchange controls at all. You can freely deposit and withdraw capital without restrictions or limits.
Uruguay: country, law, economy
Uruguay's key parameters for living, capital, tax residency and operating in the region's most predictable jurisdiction.
Legal succession
In Uruguay, the rules of the game have not changed for decades. Tax and civil codes remain stable regardless of changes in governments.
Freedom of capital
Complete lack of exchange control. Free entry, withdrawal and storage of capital in any hard currency without restrictions or special permissions.
Residence permit for independents
A clear legislative track based on the Solvencia Económica. Ideal for those who have income outside the country and do not want to freeze their capital.
Haven for capital
Place of concentration of the largest capitals in the region. The choice of founders Mercado Libre and dLocal confirms its status as the safest haven.
Technological reliability
Region leader in digital connectivity: 85% of households on fiber optics. Stable Internet and power grid without rolling blackouts.
Social balance
Lowest level of inequality in Latin America. This provides an absence of class aggression and a predictable living environment.

Stability
Are you looking for the most predictable country in Latin America?
Uruguay is chosen for its institutional stability, investment rating, calm political system and clear rules of the game.
Taxes
Are tax benefits for foreign income important to you?
Uruguay is of interest to new tax residents due to its preferential treatment for foreign income and assets.
Market
Do you need a large domestic market to scale quickly?
Uruguay is intimate: it is suitable for the protection of capital, life and structure, but not for those who need a huge consumer market.
Capital
Do you want to freely deposit, store and withdraw capital in hard currency?
The lack of exchange controls is one of the key arguments in favor of Uruguay for wealthy families and entrepreneurs.
Climate
Are you okay with the ocean climate, winds and calm rhythm?
Uruguay is not a tropical postcard. It is comfortable here for those who value orderliness, safety and quality of the environment.
Horizon
Are you planning for the long term rather than seeking a document as quickly as possible?
Uruguay reveals a long horizon: residence, tax status, capital, real estate and banking infrastructure require a calm setup.
Quiz result
Uruguay is possible, but requires analysis
The responses show a mixed bag. Uruguay is worth comparing with other jurisdictions and checking for taxes, capital, terms, family and real life horizon.
Discuss the resultBriefly: who is Uruguay suitable for?
Uruguay is suitable for those looking for stability, capital protection, clear rules, tax benefits for new residents and a quiet living environment.
Uruguay is less suitable for those who need a large market, a hot tropical climate, or quick results without adjusting tax and residency status.

Frequently asked questions about Uruguay (FAQ)
We have collected answers to basic questions about citizenship, banks, tax holidays and immigration documents
No, Uruguay does not require renunciation of previous citizenship. You may have dual or multiple citizenship.
Yes, this problem is completely resolved. In mid-2025, the Uruguayan government released a batch of passports that lacked the “place of birth” field. Some EU countries, in particular Germany and France, have temporarily stopped accepting these new documents. However, the Uruguayan government officially canceled this unsuccessful innovation. From August 1, 2025, the country returned to issuing passports of the previous, internationally recognized type, which includes the place of birth and is accepted throughout the world. The passport you will receive is 100% valid for visa-free travel to the Schengen area.
Yes. In Uruguay, unlike many other countries, BROU Bank opens accounts for foreigners and non-residents.
This is a preferential regime for new tax residents. You get a 10-year period during which you don't pay taxes on foreign income, including dividends and rents. This does not exempt from taxes on income received within Uruguay.
The basic package of documents includes: passport, police clearance certificates from the country of birth and countries where you have lived over the past 5 years, birth certificate and confirmation of legal income from $650/month. All documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish in Uruguay.
